I was cruisin' the EBay the other day, looking for more Demented Drive In fodder. I ran across "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" on laser disc and remembered the first time I caught it in a theater (Columbia Center Cinema). It was a matinee hosted by Captain Sterling...most likely an employee dressed in a shiny silver jumpsuit with a space helmet. He handed out Captain Sterling Club cards and led us kids into the cavernous
theater and we waited for the whirl of the projector above, spewing out the flickering images of Paul Mantee, Adam West and those flying boomerangs that looked like the War of the World's laser heads scared the living bejeezus outta me. Every summer I looked forward to the matinees with Captain Sterling. Flash forward about 10 years, I was working at the same theater that I had shared with Robinson Crusoe all those years ago and found the Captain Sterling costume up in the employee dressing room. There are moments and movies that define us. I don't know if Captain Sterling led me to host the best of the worst, but I never experienced another film like I did with "Robinson Crusoe on Mars".
